Wind simulations for the finals of the World Sailing Championship 2017 in Santander

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

From June 4th to 11th, Santander will host the Sailing World Cup Series Final. Embracing this opportunity, in Predictia we will offer during these days one-day ahead high-resolution (370 meters) meteorological forecasts in Santander and its bay. This high-resolution prediction resolves topographical details that others, with broader resolution, can not see (e.g. the bay or the city of Santander). The effects of these obstacles on the wind are relevant, especially for an activity as sensitive as sailing.

The predictions are elaborated with the regional model Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), initiated every day at 12UTC from the predictions of the global model GFS. This model represents the state of the art in regional modeling of the atmosphere, and allows to reach very high resolution (below one kilometer), realistically, emitting predictions for a wide range of variables: temperature, rain, wind at different levels, and humidity among others. The development of WRF is led by the National Center of Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the United States, although it receives contributions from all its wide community of users. These forecasts will be published every day at 22:00 (local time).

You can check these predictions below or through this link. If you are interested in these forecasts or you need more sophisticated products (e.g. higher spatial (~100m) or temporal (20 minutes) resolution) please, don't hesitate to contact us.
