Próxima Hora - a nowcasting tool for our Predictia Weather app latest version

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

Would you like to know when it will stop raining? Or when will those dark clouds begin to shower your place?

We’ve just updated our Predictia Weather app featuring the Próxima Hora tool for this latest version. It looks like a “rainfall radar” showing a rainfall forecast over the following hour in ten-minute lapses:
Forecasted rainfall path over a rainy Bilbao on 12th April 2023.

Uncertainty range forcast for days 5 to 10.

To achieve this, the app uses the meteo radars from AEMET and statistical techniques combined with observed data. So that you may check at what exact moment rainfall will show up in your chosen location, represented by the central axis in the diagram. Besides, you’ll be able to watch the forecasted path the rainfall would be following and the estimated time of arrival and/or departure from your selected location. The rainSPOT diagram, developed by meteoblue.

, was used as an inspiration for our visualization.

So far, Próxima Hora provides data for mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands only, although the rest of forecast data offered by the app cover the Canary Islands too, as well as Ceuta and Melilla.

Furthermore, our latest version features a brand new design, boosted performance and has expanded its reach from 4 up to a 10-day forecast. For Today +3, we keep using the regional WRF model, a state-of-the-art prediction system used for high-resolution regional forecasting.

From Day 5 onwards, though, Predictia Weather’s forecast shows an uncertainty range due to the intrinsic uncertainty of mid-term weather forecasting. Its data show temperature and rainfall only, an information set sourced from US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS).

Also featuring for the first time in our app – tidal info, moon phase, dawn and dusk hours.

Apart from those novelties, our app retains some of the functionalities displayed on previous versions – Temperature, Rainfall, Humidity and Wind forecast. As well as the validation option of course, so that you may compare our forecast and observed data for all the four above-mentioned features on the immediate previous day for any chosen location.

Needless to say, our app is free of charge and ad-free. And it does not store the user's data. Only available for Android so far, but an iOS version is in the making.
