Followind: seasonal wind forecast

Wednesday, July 12, 2017

As a result of the project followind, we have published a pilot application for wind speed seasonal forecasting. The instantaneous wind speed at 12:00 UTC is considered but also the frequency of days with wind speed between 5 and 25m/s. A standard bias correction technique has been applied to these forecasts.

This web application provides seasonal forecasts in the North Sea (an area of special interest for wind energy production) from the CFSv2 model generated by the NCEP/NCAR. Together with these operational predictions, the application gives information on the historical performance of the forecasts over the last 20 years, obtained from the CFSv2 model retrospective forecasts. This information allows the user to interpret the current prediction (is it high or low in a climatological context?) and to overlap with the regions where it could be valuable (according to a particular validation score, the correlation).

These forecasts are updated quarterly to show the forecast for the upcoming seasons. Explore this forecast and get a glance on the potential of this type of products.
